Bollywood Focus: Kareena Kapoor

The kid sibling of Karisma Kapoor, second daughter of Randhir Kapoor & Babita- Kareena Kapoor, made a splash in Bollywood much sooner than her sister and predecessors. Her grand entry in tinsel-ville with J.P Dutta’s ‘Refugee’ didn’t come as a sprinting surprise, instead, followers of the legendary Kapoor clan were waiting for Kareena to take charge of the baton, and take the family’s filmi legacy ahead. Though her much hyped debut vehicle with Abhishek Bachchan didn’t take a flying start, and won nothing but the carp and condemn of critics, Kareena soon become the hottest thing to have happened to Bollywood. Offers started spilling from cracks and corners of the movie world and the young Ms.Kapoor was the toast of the day. Of course, her line-up of films that followed faced the same fate at the box office as the first, and the trend continued.

‘Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai’, ‘Yaadein’, ‘Ajnabee’, ‘Asoka’ and ‘Ajnabee’ all presented by sought-after banners received damp responses from the audiences. In 2001, Karan Johar’s larger than life, family drama ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham’ turned out to be Kareena’s first hit, of course, she demanded very little of the credit for the success, it was the Shah Rukh-Kajol magic all the way, along with Hrithik Roshan’s magnetic charm and Amitabh Bachchan’s undisputable poise . ‘K3G’ fetched Kareena another title, that of ‘Poo’, the character of a funky college girl she played in the film. In spite of her rumoured off-screen attraction with Hrithik, their on-screen pairing, though appealing to the audiences, overall, the films faced thumbs down. Again in 2003, we witnessed ‘Main Prem Ki Diwani’ with Kareena, Hrithik and Abhishek; touted as the next biggest family entertainer from the Sooraj Barjatya kitty after ‘Hum Aapke Hai Kaun’ of course, met the expectations of the industry and moviegoers with utter dismay. Each time her films faces brickbats, Kareena retorts, that her scripts have failed her, she has never failed her scripts. That’s the kind of conviction she has in herself.

Nonetheless, Kareena’s demand in the film industry remained invincible through the last few years. And finally, a small-budget film like ‘Chameli’ did the screen image-makeover over for Bollywood’s glamorous ‘Poo’. Kareena received critical acclaim for a role of a commercial sex-worker, a character that any other actress of her age at the prime time of her career would shudder to take on. But it’s this daring role that changed her image from Poo to ‘Chameli’, a positive turn in her career, one that Kareena is exceedingly proud of.

‘36 China Town’ was Kareena's first release in 2006 followed by ‘Chup Chup Ke’. Both films managed to do moderately well at the box office. Her performance as Desdemona in the Indian adaptation of William Shakespeare's Othello, ‘Omkara’ was praised from audiences as well as the critics earning her a Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance and a Star Screen Award for Best Actress. Her performance in the film also landed her various nominations in the best actress category including the Filmfare Awards. Her latest release, ‘Don - The Chase Begins Again’ has done extremely well at the box office. She won favorable reviews both for her acting and her dancing in her item number. Kapoor has joined several touring stage shows throughout the years. Her latest tour, the Rockstars Concert of May 2006, in which she performed alongside Salman Khan, Zayed Khan, John Abraham, Shahid Kapoor, Esha Deol and Mallika Sherawat turned out to be a huge success overseas.

She’s been dating Shahid Kapur, son of actor Pankaj Kapur. They also acted together in quiet a few films. However, post working for thier first lovestory, Jab We Met, the two broke up. Currently she is dating Saif Ali Khan. The two will be seen together in the yet to be released film Tashan and a couple of more untitled ones.

For Kareena, her family means the world to her, and Bebo as she is lovingly called, draws her strength from her mother – Babita and sister – Karisma. Her sister having moved to Delhi with her husband, Kareena misses her immensely, but at the back of her mind she knows her sister is watching her all the time, all the way. After all, it’s all about loving your family...

Katrina, Akshay: Still friendly and going

Looks like, rumours of a tiff between Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif were just that. Apparently, Akki and Kats are still as good friends as they once were. What sparked rumours of a fall-out between the two stars, was the fact that the duo was hardly seen together during IIFA. Moreover, there was a buzz that Akshay refused to respond to Katrina’s call during the weekend. Katrina said, “Akshay came late to Bangkok. Then, once he was here, we were all busy rehearsing for our performance. There was hardly any time.” Well, if it’s not one of the starry excuses, then well and good as their fans wouldn’t possibly like their favourite jodi parting ways.

As for her time in Bangkok, looked like, Katrina could do with some more time in hand. She said, “I love the beaches and islands here. Unfortunately, throughout the day you are busy rehearsing and then at night you are too tired to step out. But, I have seen Bangkok before and it’s a beautiful place.” This thorough professional believes in working hard when the time is right.

Pretty Preity denies ugly rumours

Cracks are apparently showing in the so far hunky-dory relationship between Preity Zinta and Ness Wadia. Rumour is that the pert Bollywood actress, who has been dating the suave industrialist son of Maureen and Nusli Wadia for the past few years, is reportedly on the verge of another break-up. And the reason being given by Bollywood insiders is Preity’s popularity and apparent rise on the social circuit as co-owner of Team Mohali during the recent IPL cricket tournament. That, plus her seeming fondness for Team Mohali’s casanova skipper Yuvraj Singh appears not to have gone down too well with her reticent beau. Further, Ness’s investment in the IPL also reportedly suffered a beating and what the Wadia scion’s views on this must be is anybody’s guess. That there are regular spats between the feisty Preity and quiet Ness is known. But as for the recent controversy, the actress who is back to work and dubbing for Jahnu Barua’s film Har Pal in addition to attending rehearsals for the Bachchans’s world tour, said heatedly, “What rumours are you talking about? Which couple doesn’t have its ups and downs? Ness and I are no exception. You don’t go ahead and break-up just because you fight.”

Marriage is not even a talking point in her life currently. “Even my family is not concerned about my marriage. It’s not happening in the near future,” retorted the actress shortly. As for Yuvraj Singh, the industry grapevine suggests a flirtatious liaison between the dashing cricketer and pretty actress did flicker briefly during the IPL but has died down now. Neither will talk about it, of course.

Abhishek: No song-n-dance with Vivek

The makers of Mission Istanbul have been desperately trying to promote their venture, right from the days of its filming. One of the many types of bait thrown to lure the unsuspecting audience was that Abhishek Bachchan will dance along with Vivek Oberoi for an item number in this action based film. Now, who will not want to watch Aishwarya Rai’s ex-lover and current husband shaking a leg together? Just imagine the hype that could possibly rise courtesy some alleged tiff they had while shooting?

Unfortunately (or otherwise?), at a recent event, Abhi cleared the air of all the rumours of an item number with Vivek. Considering that Apoorva Lakhia and Abhishek are close friends, the denial was indeed surprising. So was Apoorva just taking advantage of his closeness with the Bachchans? Here is what Abhishek said: “Apoorva considers me as a lucky mascot for his film. When he approached me, I did agree to do a song in the film. However, I have no idea if I’ll be sharing screen space with any other actor. I’d be more than happy to do it with anybody.” There, the Bachchan brat wriggled his way out of this one too!

Vidya with Shahid by Kismat

As Kismat Konnection gets closer to its release date, Vidya Balan is getting edgier. We wonder why, considering the chemistry that konnects her with Shaahid Kapur. Right from day one of the filming, their chemistry was under the scanner. While, in the beginning critics were uncertain if the two would click together, now the focus has shifted to their growing rapport. Apart from Vidya’s off-screen relationship, her on-screen glamorous avatar also gave way to immense publicity much to the filmmaker’s pleasure. As for Vidya, she believes in destiny and thinks it was just that which helped her bag the film. She said, “It was in my in kismat to do this film. Because of such a strong belief in kismat, I just feel like I had every reason to be a part of this.”

After receiving a lot of flak over her (lack of) dressing sense in her previous venture, Heyy Babbyy, this one seems to have a hot and happening Vidya. She has not only experimented with her looks but also dared to match steps with the nimble-toed, Shaahid. She says, “I just did my work. I didn’t try to match steps with him. It would be very difficult to do that. He is too good a dancer. I was just enjoying myself.”

She also commented on her bond with Shaahid. She said, “We have a comfort level that helps create the chemistry on screen. In Toronto, right from the beginning, we gelled so well that it was bound to show on the big screen. We have received many compliments from people and the response is really nice.” Hopefully, this film will garner more bouquets than brickbats for this southern beauty.
