Bollywood focus: Shilpa Shetty

Shilpa Shetty was born on 8th June 1975 in a strict and traditional close-knit family although she was born in Tamil Nadu. She is the elder daughter of Surendra and Sunanda Shetty. She attended St. Anthony Girls’ High School, located in Chembur, and later attended Podar College. She is a trained Bharatnatyam dancer. She was also into sports and was the captain of the baseball team in school and earned a black belt in Karate and currently a dance sport expert and enthusiast.

Shilpa started her career by modeling for a soft drink named Limca in 1991. An award-winning Indian film actress and model, she made her debut in the film Baazigar in 1993. Although she was a supporting actress alongside Shahrukh Khan and Kajol, the film was a major success and earned her a nomination for Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award.

Her first leading role was in the film Aag in 1994, which was averagely received at the box office. She had a hit that same year with the film Main Khiladi Tu Anari opposite Akshay Kumar. This was followed by many films which were average to poor performers at the box office. Shetty starred in another big film that year Aao Pyar Karen followed by Hathkadi where she was working alongside actors such as Saif Ali Khan, Govinda and Madhoo but they failed at the box office.

In 2000 Shetty received much acclaim for her role in Dhadkan which did quite well at the Indian box office. She received several nominations under the Best Actress category in different award ceremonies. She would later go on to star with Anil Kapoor and Karisma Kapoor in the film Rishtey. Her comic performance as an eccentric fisherwoman was appreciated and she received a nomination under the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award category and various nominations for Best Comedy as well. She was also regarded as one of the best dancers Bollywood have and she also did couple of item numbers in movies the famous one was Dil Walo Ke Dil Ka Karar from movie Shool.

2004 was also a good year for Shetty with the release of Garv in which she portrayed a Muslim orphan and disillusioned table dancer starring opposite Salman Khan though the film had moderate business at the box office she was critically acclaimed. However, she received much acclaim for her performance in Phir Milenge which critics consider as her best performance so far, where she makes a sensitive portrayal of a successful city high-flyer who contracts HIV via unprotected sex and becomes a social outcast as a result.

She also starred with her sister Shamita Shetty, in the film Fareb. In 2006, she was a judge on Jhalak Dikhlaja, a Sony Entertainment Television.

The year 2007 proved to be her most successful year at the box office and in her life. Her first release, Life In A... Metro did decent business at the box office. The film was also critically acclaimed and Shetty's performance was appreciated by audiences and critics as well. Her second release, Apne was a good performer at the box office, receiving a semi-hit status.

Shetty was a contestant in and the winner of Celebrity Big Brother UK. She is the first Indian celebrity included in the Celebrity version. She was reportedly paid Rs.31.5m for her participation. Shilpa was one of the winners in the show and the British public showered votes on her. In February 2007, Shetty attended a reception at the House of Commons, by invitation of Keith Vaz MP to meet with British Prime Minister Tony Blair. She was also invited to meet with Queen Elizabeth II at Marlborough House in London in March 2007.

In early months of 2007, Shilpa got into controversies at the Aids concert were Hollywood star Richard Gere continuously kissed Shilpa on her cheeks.

Manoj Kumar forgives Shahrukh Khan




Shah Rukh Khan, Gauri Khan and Farah Khan went personally to meet and apologize to Manoj Kumar at his place of residence. Touched by the gesture, the patriarch has forgiven him. Apparently, Yash Chopra had called asking the patriot for his address but didn’t reveal who was with him. On receiving Yash Chopra, Manoj was very touched to find SRK with wife Gauri and Farah Khan in tow.

Manoj Kumar had initially given 48 hours ultimatum to Shahrukh to remove the spoof from OSO or face legal action.

Yash Chopra, Shah Rukh, Gauri and Farah spent three hours at Manoj Kumar’s house. According to Manoj Kumar every one commits mistakes but the one who realizes his mistakes and improves on them are to be saluted.

Hrithik to lend voice for Hanuman Returns




Hanuman Returns will be dubbed in six languages like Hindi, Tamil, Telagu, Kanada, Bhojpuri and English. According to the grapevine, Hrithik Roshan will be lending his voice for the English version of Hanuman Returns.

After the shooting of Jodhaa Akbar, Hrithik doesn’t have any other project but this. Hanuman Returns will release on the 28th of December.

Mallika - Katrina war on Welcome sets




According to sources Mallika Sherawat had a tiff with Katrina Kaif on the sets of Welcome. Apapently, she made fun of Katrina’s clothing, her hairstyle and British accent.

According to people present on the sets, Katrina used to greet Mallika, but the latter never used to respond to her. Reportedly, Mallika claimed that Katrina gets movies only because of Salman Khan. Well, with Welcome due to be released on Christmas day, controversies were bound to rake up and one just did.

Madhuri Dixit was born on the 15th of May 1967, in a traditional Marathi Brahmin family. She was raised in Mumbai and got her micro-biology degree from Parle College. She is also trained as a Kathak dancer. In 1999, she married an Indian-American cardiovascular surgeon, who practices in Denver, Sriram Madhav Nene. They have two sons named Arin and Ryan.

Madhuri was a top model before she entered the film industry. Her career was launched by the Rajshri’s film, Abodh and the film failed and bombed at the box office. However, it was N Chandra’s Tezaab that actually marked her entry into Bollwyood. Also, her mentor, Subhash Ghai saw enough potential in her to ignore this petite newcomer. He offered her a role in his film, Ram Lakhan and sine then there was no looking back for her.

After her movie Tezaab was a hit, the rest of her movies till ’94 like Dayavan, Ram Lakhan, Dil, Saajan, Beta, Khalnayak and the record breaking blockbuster Hum Aapke Hai Kaun!. However after this it was a low period for the actress as her films were mostly flops. Then after a low of three years the actress bounced back with the super hit Dil To Pagal Hai. She won her fourth Filmfare Best Actress Award for her role in this film.

Madhuri is one of the most popular actress’ in Bollywood and is well known for her acting skills and her acting talent. Madhuri’s dance sequences have been appreciated in songs like Ek Do Teen, Dhak Dhak, Chane Ke Kheth Mein, Choli Ke Peechche many more. For all of her dance numbers, she has always received critical acclaim from the audience and the critics.

Madhuri has always been the muse for the well known artist MF Hussain, in 2000 she acted in a film titled Gaja Gamini. The film was supposed to be a tribute to the grace and beauty of this actress.

In the year 2001 Madhuri was awarded the National Citizens Award as recognition of various activities that affect the everyday life of the public. Later in the year 2002 she starred in the film Devdas along side Shahrukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai. For this film Madhuri won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the film. Besides, the movie had a special screening at the Cannes Film festival. After this she just seemed to have vanished from the silver screen.

However, she’d just taken a long break. She recently performed on stage for the Filmfare Awards and danced to the track from her last movie Devdas. In December last year, Madhuri returned to Mumbai along with her husband and children to start filming for her latest movie Aaja Nachle which was produced by Yash Chopra and directed by Anil Mehta. On International Women’s day a special article was released to honour Bollywood heroines and it was topped by none other that Madhuri Dixit and she was rated as the best actress in Bollywood.
